When Digital Deployment came together and clarified its mission two years ago, it prioritized “Happy Shiny People” as our main focus. We recognize that health and well-being is essential for any other kind of productivity. To us, Happy, Shiny People are like food, water, and shelter in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: without them, little else matters. When present, people and companies naturally ascend to self-actualization and high performance.
Each week all employees check in using our anonymous survey at http://www.digitaldeployment.com/checkin which measures wellness, team connectedness and the presence of our values. We place cool Digital Deployment tokens (with our values inscribed) on every employee’s desk at the beginning of the week. When each employee checks in, they drop a token in the jar. For the last 31 weeks, we’ve had 100% participation.
The team has spontaneously created dozens of silly memes that they email out to encourage participation. (See images below.) They also look out for tokens on each other’s desks.
Every Monday at our team-wide meeting, we look at the results to see if we’re averaging 8 overall.

We take action as needed. One week our ‘money and finance’ area was low, so we brought in free financial advising to help people feel more in control of their financial situations. Also, the low money score led to a discussion about why the team was feeling broke, and two people shared that they were moving and that had them feeling financially strained. As a result of the discussion, another team member offered them free moving boxes, a shampoo vacuum, supplies and a truck, which helped save money.
In another case, “Love and romance” was low so we shared articles about creating space and dedicating time to explore and nurture our relationships.
Everyone knows how important the scores are and we stay very present to our commitment. It matters more than anything else to Digital Deployment, and we recognize that without workplace wellness, our strategic priorities and productivity will be put at risk.
Digital Deployment offers extraordinary benefits to make all of this possible. We fully load each employee’s Health Savings Account ($275/mo for single, $545/mo for families) to spend on any health-related expense they want, or to help pay deductibles. We also cover up to $725/mo toward each person’s insurance premium, and we offer seven awesome health plans. We also offer 3% matching of 401(k)s, so each employee builds wealth which they could borrow against in a crisis, leverage to buy a house, etc. We also offer free counseling, legal help, mediation, etc. through our employee assistance program. With an unlimited vacation policy, we trust each employee to make a schedule that works for everyone.
We also stock the fridge with unlimited food for employees and visiting clients, including our famous veggie bags, smoothies, and more.
We invest heavily in every team member, standing for personal and professional growth. We nurture each person’s journey: healthy eating, exercise, meditation, coaching, travel, unlimited vacation—whatever it takes to be the best we can be. Wellness is our foundation, rooting us to reach our goals.
